We are proud to announce the third annual Rice Student Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM) Research Symposium on Saturday, January 26 in Duncan Hall. Apply to participate today at online application.

Conference events will include: 

  • Courtesy continental breakfast and networking lunch 
  • Outstanding faculty research talks
  • "Lightning talks": 60-second student research talks and a corresponding student poster session. The posters will be judged by a panel of judges. 
  • The following prizes will be awarded:
  • First Place: $100 gift card. 
  • Second Place: $50 gift card. 
  • People's Choice Award: $100 gift card (after a vote by student attendees)
  • Random Gift Card Drawing: Two $25 Gift Cards for participating attendees
  • Q&A panel discussion session led by Rice PhD STEM graduates now in industry and the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. 
  • Q&A student panel discussion about academic and summer research experiences for undergraduates (REUs)

Invited Research Talks: 

  • Rice Professor Rafael Verduzco will discuss some of the challenges in harnessing solar energy and describe his work to develop polymers which can absorb sunlight and generate electricity. 
  • Professsor Devika Subramanian will discuss computational methods for constructing predictive models from big data, and describe work in predicting mortality in chronic heart failure patients and estimating risk of hurricane damage.
  • Professor Richard Tapia will tell the compelling story of his journey from the barrios of Los Angeles to receiving the National Medal of Science at the White House.

This event is being sponsored by the Rice Dean of Engineering, Ken Kennedy Institute for Information Technology, and the Rice Student Association.   

This conference is co-hosted by the Empowering Leadership Alliance (ELA), the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE).

We are now calling ALL Rice undergraduates for poster proposals for the poster competition held during the Rice Undergraduate STEM Research symposium on Saturday, January 26, 2013. The goal is to provide a platform for an informal discussion of one’s research with other Rice colleagues and to inspire other students to pursue undergraduate research opportunities.

The posters will be judged by panel of judges. The following prizes will be awarded:

  • First Place: $100 gift card. 
  • Second Place: $50 gift card. 
  • People's Choice Award: $100 gift card (after a vote is taken by student attendees)

Competition Format 

There will be two components to the competition:

  1. A "lightning" research talk session from 11:10-11:40am in McMurtry Auditorium during which all poster participants will have one minute to share and discuss their exciting research.
  2. The poster session will be held in Martel Hall from 1:45-2:40pm.

Due to time constraints, there will be a maximum of 20 undergraduate participants in this competition. We plan to include all departments in both the natural sciences and engineering. The best abstracts from each department will be chosen to compete.
